The topic of reasons why we love and how we love various individuals is exhibited all through the book The Accidental Tourist, composed by Anne Tyler. There are two primary characters that experience and acknowledge the adjustments in their lives, and one character that stays static all through the book, helping one of the characters to change. Macon Leary is first grounded by dejection and solace, at that point gradually frees himself up to what has all the earmarks of being a totally different world for him. At that point, there is Sarah Leary, who controls a portion of the adjustments throughout her life, and attempts to make the best of the remainder of them. The character that remaining parts the equivalent all through the book is Muriel Pritchettâ€a hound coach who checks out Macon and encourages him to acknowledge the adjustments throughout his life. Most importantly, the all inclusive subject of this book is loveâ€a astonishing new excursion for all the characters. In the start of the book, it is clarified how Macon and Sarah Leary’s child is killed and how their marriage endures along these lines. Sarah leaves Macon, which is the starting phase of Macon’s redesigned life, yet one that doesn't begin cheerfully: â€Å"He didn’t eat genuine suppers anymore†¦His hair, which Sarah used to trim for him, extended over his temple like a rack. Ande something had made his lower tops hang. He used to have restricted dark cuts of eyes; presently they were wide and startled†¦Ã¢â‚¬ (14). Macon isn't at all used to living alone. He needs to control everything and likes nothing to be left to chanceâ€Sarah’s flight isn't something he can control and he doesn't manage it well. Macon starts to imagine that he can't live without his better half, however before long understands a couple of things that truly make him consider the marriage: His mind hummed with little worries†¦The stresses changed, developed further, he thought about what had turned out badly with his marriage. Sarah had been his sole sweetheart; presently he figured he ought to have rehearsed on another person previously. During the twenty years of their marriage there’s been momentsâ€there’s been monthsâ€when he didn’t feel they had truly framed a unit the manner in which couples should. No, the remained two unmistakable individuals, and now in every case even companions. Here and there they’d appeared to be increasingly similar to rivals, elbowing one another, contending over who was the better style of person†¦ (15-16) Macon understands that he and Sarah never really became one individual; they had consistently remained as two separate individuals living in a stale, routine marriage. At last, Macon deals with the way that Sarah isn't returning home to him: â€Å"Well, obviously she wasn’t there. He knew it the moment he ventured inside that house, when he smelled that stale sight-seeing and heard the suppressed thickness of a spot with each window shut. Truly he’d known it from the start. He’d been tricking himself. He’d been making up pixie tales† (41). Macon realized that when he returned home from his work excursion that Sarah would not be there sitting tight for him like she used to. In spite of the fact that he didn't request this adjustment in his life, and subsequent to living alone for some time, moves back with his sister and brothersâ€a agreeable change for him. This all starts to change when Macon meets an unordinary lady working at the creature emergency clinic where he takes his pooch and becomes colleagues with her. Muriel permits Macon to open up to her, and Macon demonstrates his ability to do as such: ‘I lost my son,’ Macon said. ‘He was just†¦he went to a cheeseburger joint and then†¦someone came, a robbery man, and shot him. I can’t go to supper with individuals! I can’t converse with their sons! You need to quit asking me. I don’t intend to offend you however I’m only not up to this, do you hear? She took one of his wrists tenderly and she brought him into the house, still not completely opening the entryway, with the goal that he had a feeling of sneaking past something, of barely dodging something. She shut the entryway behind him. She put her arms around him and embraced him. (189-190) right away, Macon doesn't really think about Muriel Pritchett, yet before he knows it, h e is dating her and before long living with Muriel and her young child. This shows a huge change for Macon, and a stage forward in his life. Muriel causes Macon to see the world in an alternate manner. She is the character that appears to know precisely what she is after throughout everyday life, and subsequently doesn't change over the span of this book. Then again, all Macon does all through the book is transform himself in extraordinary manners. Macon figures out how to love and trust Muriel such that he never has with anybody. In an expansion to Macon’s evolving life, there is his better half, Sarah, who settles on the choice to leave Macon a year after the demise of their child. Sarah feels that Macon doesn't communicate his feelings as she might want him to, and that he doesn't give her the solace she needs and has required previously. This disappoints Sarah enormously and she doesn't feel as though she can proceed in the marriage: I said to you a day or two ago, I stated, ‘Macon, presently that Ethan’s dead I some of the time wonder if there’s any point to life. ’ Do you recollect what you replied? †¦ ’You stated, ‘Honey, to come clean, it never appeared to me there was such much point in the first place. ’ Those were your definite words†¦ ’You simply go on your regular old path like previously. Your little schedules and customs, discouraging propensities, for quite a while. No solace by any stretch of the imagination. ’†¦ ‘I just can’t live with you anymore,’ Sarah said. 3-4) Sarah is heart-broken with this choice, as is Macon, however she is simply not content with her marriage. During Macon and Sarah’s detachment, Sarah begins to proceed onward and starts dating a man. In spite of the fact that she has her ver y own condo, which is the thing that she needed, Sarah acknowledges the amount she really cherishes and misses Macon, and makes a slight and practically unnoticeable endeavor to reunite with him a lot later in the book during a discussion among her and Macon: ‘It [the rain] looks like strips that simply blur away mostly down from the sky. ’ ‘I wish I were there to watch it with you,’ Sarah said†¦ ‘Macon? Do you†¦What’s her name? The individual you live with? ’ ‘Muriel,’ he said. Which he knew before she asked, he suspected. ‘Do you plan on remaining with Muriel until the end of time? ’ ‘I truly couldn’t say,’ he said. (289-290) Sarah is presently the one aching for Macon. Macon imagines that the main activity is return to Sarah, since, all things considered, he had been yearning to recover her for quite a while. Macon comes back to his home with Sarah, leaving Muriel: â€Å"He rode on through the city, up Charles Street, into his old neighborhood. He stopped and cut the motor and sat taking a gander at the house. The first floor windows were dull. The upstairs windows were delicately shining. Clearly, he had come home† (291). Macon is hesitant about returning home to Sarah, however in the rear of his brain he despite everything feels like he needs her since they shared such an extensive amount their lives together. Before long, while Macon is on another work excursion to Paris, his back goes out and Sarah flies in to deal with him. Things appear to be working out in a good way, yet then Sarah sees Macon pressing his things a couple of days after the fact, which gives one more change to Sarah, just as Macon: Sarah stated, ‘Macon? †¦ ‘What would you say you are doing? ’ ‘I’m pressing to leave. ’ ‘But shouldn't something be said about your back? ’ she inquired. ‘And I’ve got each one of those arrangements! Also, we were going to take a subsequent special first night! ’ ‘Sweetheart,’ he said. He brough t down himself warily till he was perched on the bed. He got her hand. It remained dead while she watched his face. ‘You’re returning to that woman,’ she said. ‘Yes, I am,’ he said. ‘Why, Macon? ’ ‘I simply chose, Sarah. I considered it the greater part of the previous evening. It wasn’t simple. It’s not the path of least resistance, trust me. †¦ he saw now how such couples developed. They were not, as he’d constantly assumed, the aftereffect of some over the top absence of observation, yet had met up for reasons that the remainder of the world could never figure. (339-340) Macon understands that he is more joyful with Muriel, and despite the fact that he wouldn't like to cause Sarah torment, this time, it is Macon that is rolling out an improvement that Sarah can't helpâ€instead of the reverse way around. Hence, Sarah must acknowledge these adjustments throughout her life, alongside all the high points and low points. At last, Muriel Pritchett is demonstrated to be the one character that doesn't experience changes in the length of the book, previously having encountered significant modifications in her prior life. Muriel guarantees Macon of himself and causes Macon to feel required without precedent for quite a while: â€Å"Macon introduced himself before her, holding out the pizza. ‘Ta-da! ’ he murmured. She gazed toward him and gave that enthusiastic grin of hersâ€an lavish, Victorian V. ‘Ma,’ she stated, ‘I’m going at this point! Macon’s here! ’ It had been quite a while since anybody made such an occasion of his arrival† (196). Macon shows that he is starting to permit himself to think about Muriel, and to be content with her and this adjustment in his lifeâ€being required. Later on, when Macon is at his sister’s hous

By the same token, the ability to maintain good eye contact is an important aspect of social interaction. People who look others in the eye are perceived as friendly and welcoming. However, many shy and socially anxious people have difficulty with this part of communication.   What Is Eye Contact Anxiety? Eye contact anxiety refers to discomfort about making eye contact or looking other people in the eye. Some people simply arent as comfortable making eye contact as others. A person with eye contact anxiety may feel unable to look directly into other peoples eyes when talking or feel like they are being judged or scrutinized when making eye contact. Why People Avoid Eye Contact People have eye contact anxiety for various reasons. For those without a diagnosed mental health condition, avoidance of eye contact could be related to shyness or a lack of confidence. Looking someone in the eye while speaking can feel uncomfortable for those without a lot of practice making conversation or who tend to prefer not being in the spotlight. Eye Contact and Social Anxiety Disorder Often people with social anxiety describe looking someone in the eyes as anxiety-provoking and uncomfortable. This is likely due, in part, to genetic wiringâ€"research has shown that people diagnosed with social anxiety disorder (SAD) have a pronounced fear of direct eye contact.?? This means that these individuals avoid eye contact to manage feelings of arousal;?? in other words, eye contact is a painful experience for them. Is the Lack of Eye Contact a Symptom of Autism? Overcoming Eye Contact Anxiety It is important to make eye contact during conversation. This skill is vital both for your career and personal relationships. While some people may be predisposed to fearing or avoiding eye contact, most individuals can learn to improve their eye contact skills and become better at making good eye contact. There are two phases to learning eye contact. Reduce anxiety about eye contact.Improve skills for making eye contact. Reducing Anxiety About Eye Contact Individuals with a diagnosed anxiety disorder will benefit from treatment including  cognitive-behavioral therapy  and/or  medication.?? Most people with social anxiety disorder can learn to overcome their fear response and maintain better eye contact. In this way, eye contact is just one aspect of social interaction that you can become desensitized to through practice and exposure. How CBT Can Treat Social Anxiety Disorder If youve not been diagnosed with an anxiety disorder but still find that eye contact makes you anxious, you can build your tolerance by engaging in increasing amounts of eye contact over time. Gradually, it should feel less uncomfortable as you do it more often. Start small with people who make you feel less anxious, such as a good friend, and work your way up to more anxiety-provoking situations such as holding eye contact with your work supervisor. You could even try starting by making eye contact with characters on television, in Youtube videos (e.g., vlogs), or over Facetime or other video chats if real-life eye contact feels too stressful at first. If you find your anxiety rising before or during situations in which you must make eye contact, try practicing deep breathing to slow your heart rate and calm yourself down. Improving Eye Contact Skills If you are talking to someone one-on-one (or looking at people within a group), choose a spot directly between or slightly above the listener’s eyes.  If this doesn’t feel comfortable, try letting your eyes go slightly out of focus, which has the added benefit of softening and relaxing your gaze. Look away occasionally. Staring too intensely will make people uncomfortable.?? Employing these two strategies to improve your eye contact will make your listeners feel more connected to you and increase the likelihood that you will feel more comfortable when speakingâ€"either to a group or to an individual. Tips for Making Eye Contact Make eye contact before you start talking to someone.Use the 50/70 rule: maintain eye contact 50 percent of the time when speaking and 70 percent when listening.Hold eye contact for about four to five seconds at a time, or about as much time as it takes you to register the color of their eyes. When you break eye contact, glance to the side before resuming your gaze. When you look away, do it slowly. Looking away too quickly (darting your eyes) can make you appear nervous or shy.Dont look down when you look away, as this shows a lack of confidence.Rather than looking away, you can also look at another spot on their face. Imagine an inverted triangle connecting their eyes and mouth. Every five seconds, rotate which point of the triangle you are looking at.Break your gaze to make a gesture or to nod, as this appears more natural than looking away because youve grown uncomfortable with the amount of eye contact. If looking someone directly in the eyes is too stressful, instead look at a sp ot on their nose, mouth, or chin. How to Practice Exposure Therapy for the Fear of Public Speaking In a Group When speaking to a group of people, instead of thinking of the group as a whole, imagine having individual conversations with one person in the group at a time. As you speak, choose one person in the group and pretend that you are talking just with that person. Look at him as you finish your thought or sentence. As you begin a new sentence or idea, choose another person in the group and look her in the eye as you finish your thought. Make sure that you eventually include everyone in the group. Top Tips for Managing Public Speaking Anxiety Research on Eye Contact in Social Anxiety Disorder A 2017  review  published in Current Psychiatry Reports  found that social anxiety is related to a mixture of being on guard and avoiding processing emotional social stimuli.?? This means that at a party, you might both be on the lookout for people who seem to be judging you, but also try to avoid situations in which you feel you are being judged. In addition, the review showed that socially anxious people tend to avoid maintaining eye contact. Again, this is likely due to the fear of being judged. A Word From Verywell If you find that your social anxiety is severe  to the point that looking someone in the eye is overly distressing, seek help from a mental health professional or your family doctor. If you have not already been diagnosed with SAD, your symptoms will be assessed and a treatment plan for your unique situation drawn up.

Contrast in Days of Obligation Essay - 622 Words

Contrast in â€Å"Days of Obligation† Acclaimed American author Richard Rodriquez’s autobiography â€Å"Days of Obligation† conveys that his feelings for both Mexico and the United States can be expressed through contrasts. Rodriquez uses pathos, tropes, and schemes to articulate his feelings. His purpose for writing about the contrasts between Mexico and California is to help readers understand the differences that affected his life. Rodriguez’s relationship with his literate audience is personal, since he is opening about his personal life and his views on it. In the passage, Rodriguez’s use of pathos is evident in many places. In the first paragraph alone he uses it when he states that â€Å"Mexico play the tragic part; California plays the role†¦show more content†¦This figure of speech is seen in the fourth paragraph when Rodriguez says â€Å"I use the word ‘comedy’ here as the Greeks used it, with upmost seriousness, to suggest a world where youth is not a fruitless metaphor; where it is possible to start anew; where it is possible to escape the rivalries of the Capulets and the McCoys; where young women can disprove the adages of grandmothers.† The uses of these schemes are important in the passage because they stress emphasis on certain things that help him in explaining and conveying his feelings. Another way Rodriguez explores and conveys his conflicted feelings is with use of tropes. He uses rhetorical question, which is asking a question, not for the purpose of eliciting an answer but for the purpose of asserting or denying something obliquely. The most effective rhetorical questions in conveying his feelings is in the second to last paragraph. He questions things such as â€Å"How shall I present the argument between comedy and tragedy, this tension that describes my life? Shall I start with the boy’s chapter, then move toward more ‘mature’ tragic conclusions?† These questions help define the confusion Rodriquez faces for the reader. Through the use of pathos, schemes, and tropes, Rodriquez offers his conflicting feelings about California and Mexico. Is Global Warming Natural or Man

Introduction There is little doubt that our earth is undergoing a gradual increase in temperature. Baffling statistics by the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPPC) indicate that the earth’s temperature has risen by roughly 0.6 degrees Celsius, the highest since the mid 1800s, further reports indicate that thesix year periog between1997 and 2003 were the hottest years ever recorded.Advertising We will write a custom essay sample on Is Global Warming Natural or Man-made? specifically for you for only $16.05 $11/page Learn More Worst is yet to come as the United Nations committee on climate has predicted a temperature rise of between 1.8 to 6 Degrees Celsius by the end of the century, this is enough to melt all ice and polar caps around the world (IPPC, 2007). This would spell disaster as many countries, cities and towns will be submerged, including the Netherlands and New York City. Global warming is real and unless we act appropriately, almost half of all earth will be under the sea at the turn of the century. Natural or man-made? In the past few years, the threat of global warming has appeared real and this has led to debates over its cause. The media, politicians and the general population have been divided on this topic. Skeptics argue that human activity is not the leading cause of global warming and assert that earth’s climate will change continuously, as it has done in the past, human activities not withstanding (Singer, pp. 1). However, to understand the actual cause(s) of global warming, we need to understand how the process occurs. The main cause of global warming is Greenhouse gases, this consists of water vapor, carbon dioxide (CO2), methane (CH4), and Ozone. The highest contributor of these gases to the atmosphere is man. The Industrial Revolution had greatly increased the amounts of CO2, CH4, chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs) and nitrous oxide in the atmosphere with levels of CO2 and CH4 increasing by 40% and 150% respectively since the mid 18th century. These values are the highest during the last 650,000 years, the last time CO2 levels were higher than the present levels was roughly 20 million years ago (IPPC, 2007). High levels of CO2 have been caused by burning fossil fuels and de-forestation, man is the cause of both (Simon et al, 2010). A recent study examined more than seven million studies of temperature, salinity, and other factors that affect the world’s water systems collected by the US National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, and compared them with predictions from computer simulations. The study found out that natural occurrences in the atmosphere, such as volcanic eruptions and the sun’s activities, could not sufficiently account for global warming. Simulations based on human activities, however, corresponded exactly to the observations. The study eliminated all possible causes of global warming and was left with one culprit: man (Henderson, 20 05). The study also simulated past and future consequences of global warming and the findings were nothing to be admired and cannot be merely dismissed.Advertising Looking for essay on environmental studies? Continued melting at this rate could destabilize the ocean currents that keep Britain warmer than other European countries (Henderson, 2005). Solution The evidence that man is responsible for global warming is admissible, therefore, solutions to global warming lies with us. The solution to global warming is quite simple, one does not have to make long journeys or spend large amounts of money, rather, implementation of the strategi es that are outlined below will assist in averting this menace. The first step is energy efficiency. This is a very large topic and covers almost all facets of energy use contributing to global warming. Energy efficiency involves adoption of energy forms that limit global warming, also referred to as alternative or renewable energy. The three main sources of these energy forms are the sun, tidal and wind energy. Other forms include hydroelectric, geothermal, diesel and biodiesel energy forms. Solar and wind energy present us with a greener and more environmentally friendly energy options, besides being renewable, they can be harnessed from almost anywhere on earth. Another simple process of keeping global warming in check is to plant trees around the house, school or in any open field. As simple as it may sound, this goes a long way to eliminating the Greenhouse gases from the atmosphere and hence making the earth cooler. Other outdoor activities such as using bicycles or walking ov er short distances instead of using a car are very pivotal in reducing the levels of Greenhouse gases. We should strive to recycle materials around the house, especially non-biodegradable types such as packaging material. Plastic packaging bags can be re-used to reduce the environmental damage related to these materials. The manufacturing process of plastic bags also leads to an increase in CO2 in the atmosphere. Conclusion The evidence that global warming is caused by man is overwhelming, but the question of how to go about it remains controversial. Scientists have mentioned that even if we stopped releasing Greenhouse emissions into the atmosphere, the earth would still be hotter by a degree Fahrenheit.Advertising We will write a custom essay sample on Is Global Warming Natural or Man-made? specifically for you for only $16.05 $11/page Learn More However, whatever action we take today makes a big difference towards stabilizing mother earth’s te mperature. Studies show that we have to cut emissions of Greenhouse gases by around 75% in order to reach safe levels. This is a major challenge, but through adoption of energy efficient technologies and practicing energy conservation at home, school or at the workplace, we can all achieve it.
